Pangong Tso Lake is situated in the Ladakh region, nestled at an elevation of about 4,350 meters (14,270 feet) above sea level. It spans the borders of India and Tibet (administered by China), making it a transboundary lake. About 60% of the lake lies within China, while the rest is in India.
Pangong Tso is a saline water lake and covers approximately 134 kilometers in length, with its width varying between 5 to 8 kilometers. Despite being a saltwater lake, it freezes completely during the harsh winter months, due to its high altitude.
How to Reach
Pangong Tso is located about 160 km from Leh, and the journey itself is as picturesque as the destination. There are several ways to reach, but the most popular option is by road, either by car, motorcycle, or taxi. The route passes through the stunning Chang La Pass, one of the highest motorable roads in the world.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit is between May and September, when the weather is pleasant, and the roads are clear. During these months, the lake reflects vibrant shades of blue and green, making it a photographer’s paradise. In winter, the lake freezes over, offering a completely different but equally stunning experience.
Permits Needed for Visiting
Since Pangong Tso is located near the India-China border, special permits are required to visit this area. Indian tourists need to obtain an Inner Line Permit (ILP) from Leh, which can easily be arranged through travel agents or online. Foreign tourists need to travel with a registered guide or group for their visit.
